Manager talks to employee about online training

THD Launches Online Food Handler Permit Training

TULSA, OK – [January 9, 2020] – The Tulsa Health Department is taking one of its largest client-based program online for convenience and accessibility.

During a Facebook Live today, THD’s food protection services program announced its Food Handler Permit training is now available online as well as limited in-person classes. This program works to safeguard public health through education on safe food handling practices and the regulation of food service establishments. Each year, food protection services educates over 30,000 restaurant employees and other food employees on food safety.

“We are thrilled to offer an interactive food safety online training experience that can be accessed at any time,” said DeBrena Hilton, food protection service manager. “The online training system also offers an option for employers to pay for their employee’s permits, and if they have computers available for employee use onsite at the establishment, the food worker can log in and take the course as part of the establishment onboarding process.”

All local food service employees must have an original, valid Food Handler Permit from THD in their possession while at work. To receive a permit, you must successfully complete a THD Food Safety Class or pass the THD Waiver Test. Food protection services now hosts food handler training classes online for the employee’s convenience on any digital device. From training to testing, this online class is available in eight different languages with four more in the way and can be taken 24/7.

“Not only is the training available in many different languages, if a food employee needs a permit and is having a hard time with transportation or finding time in their schedule to make it to our training center, now they can log in at work or home to learn about how important their roles are in protecting consumers’ health,” said Hilton.

There are limited in-person class opportunities at Eastgate Metroplex, located at 14002 E 21st St, Suite 550, Tulsa, OK 74134, for those who still wish to receive the training in the classroom or do not have access to online devices. There is no pre-registration required for in-person classes. The class is approximately two hours and is offered in English and Spanish.

Upon passing the test, the employee receives a Food Handler Permit. Food Handler Permits must be available at all times while the employee is working. The inspector will accept screenshots and paper copies. Duplicate original plastic card permits can be obtained at the Eastgate Metroplex Training Center for $5. If you completed the course online, you can log-in to your account and reprint at any time for free.

Taking an internet online training course from a third party does not qualify to get a THD permit. You will still need to pay the $20 fee and take the THD Waiver Test to receive a valid Food Handler Permit. Temporary Permits are no longer available.
