WIC
Supplemental Nutrition for Women, Infants and Children
WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that serves to safeguard the health of income-eligible women, infants and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk. The program provides food vouchers for nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals for health care. More than 7.5 million people benefit from WIC each month.
Who is eligible?
- Pregnant women (and up to six weeks after pregnancy)
- Breastfeeding women (up to 1st birthday)
- Nonbreastfeeding postpartum women (up to six months after pregnancy)
- Infants (up to 1st birthday)
- Children(up to 5th birthday)
Applicants must live in the State in which they apply and meet income guidelines.
WIC is a program of the Food and Nutrition Service, a Federal agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is not an entitlement program, but rather a Federal grant program for which Congress authorizes a specific amount of funds annually.
