Personal Health: We're here for you

May is Better Hearing Month

Hearing loss currently affects more than 36 million Americans and is the third most common health problem in the country. Although hearing problems are commonly associated with the normal aging process, more than half of all hearing-impaired persons are younger than 65. With the increased use of personal music players (MP3s) and earbuds, the number of Americans experiencing hearing loss at a younger age is increasing. In fact, 15-20% of American teens will have already suffered hearing damage due to noise exposure by the time they leave high school.

In addition, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, hearing loss is one of the most frequently occurring birth defects; approximately 1-3 infants per 1,000 are born with significant hearing loss. Since 2000, a state mandate has required that all infants be screened for the detection of hearing impairments. If an infant gets a "Refer" in hospital, it is important to have a rescreen performed as soon as possible. Early detection and intervention are key to rehabilitating hearing loss in children.

In an effort to raise public awareness for the growing number of Americans suffering from hearing loss, the American Academy of Audiology, in conjunction with the Tulsa Health Department, is celebrating Better Hearing Month this May.  As part of Better Hearing Month, THD is encouraging consumers to be more aware of their hearing health.

You may have a problem and need to see an audiologist if:

  • You have trouble hearing conversation in a noisy environment, such as a restaurant
  • You are unable to hear people talk to you without looking at them
  • You have a constant ringing or pain in your ears

The first step in treatment of a hearing problem is a hearing evaluation by an audiologist. The Tulsa Health Department provides audiological services for children ages birth to eighteen, including Newborn Hearing Follow-up Testing, Hearing Evaluation, and Hearing Aid and Related Services. To learn more about the services offered, click here.
