K5THD
Congratulations! If you are viewing this Web page, chances are you have contacted K5THD, or have heard about our unique amateur radio station. K5THD is the club callsign for the Tulsa Health Department Amateur Radio Club (THDARC). THDARC membership is comprised of employees of the Tulsa Health Department, who, on their own time, have acquired a level of knowledge sufficient to qualify them for licensure in the Amateur Radio Service, and have achieved a level of expertise sufficient to qualify them for participation in one of the most exciting new initiatives at the Health Department.
Following 9/11, the Tulsa Health Department implemented dozens of new initiatives designed to enhance our readiness for responding to catastrophic disasters, natural and man-made. For obvious reasons, many of those initiatives are classified, but many are not, and information regarding them is freely shared with others to assist them in their own preparedness activities. Stellar among our initiatives is the installation of a fully functional Emergency Operations Center (EOC), one of the first in the nation to be sponsored by a local public health department. Located in our EOC is a state-of-the-art amateur radio station with capabilities on all HF, VHF and UHF amateur frequencies. Active modes of operation for the station include voice, CW, RTTY, PSK-31, SSTV and ATV. The station and all its amenities were made possible through the insightfulness of Tulsa Health Department's administration by including it as an integral component of the EOC design.
THDARC was formed to develop internal capacity for staffing the EOC, particularly the Amateur Radio station. Several employees have received their Amateur Radio licenses, and meet often to practice the art of communication and enhance their ability to provide emergency communications support in the event of a disaster.
