2009 Food Safety Survey Results

The Tulsa Health Department (THD) recently contracted with an independent research firm to conduct a survey to understand the prevailing attitudes and opinions of its food safety training, inspection, and enforcement efforts in Tulsa County among both consumers and restaurant owners. Key Findings from Restaurant Industry Survey

  • 97% of restaurants said that the current Tulsa County food code would have NO IMPACT on any plans to grow or expand their current restaurant operations.
  • 95% of restaurants said that the current Tulsa County food code would NOT PREVENT them from locating a new restaurant in Tulsa County.
  • 78% of restaurants believe the food codes in Tulsa County are about right, while 16% think they are too strict and 5% think they are too lenient.
  • 86% of restaurants believe the role of THD in training food service workers about safe food preparation and handling is VERY IMPORTANT (68%) or IMPORTANT (18%).
  • 80% of restaurants rated the THD Manager Certification Program as VERY IMPORTANT (61%) or IMPORTANT (19%).
  • 82% of restaurants believe THD should continue at the SAME LEVEL of restaurant inspection scrutiny as it does now while 12% think THD should be MORE STRICT in its inspection efforts.
  • 92% of restaurants rated their experience with THD's food safety training program as EXCELLENT (43%), VERY GOOD (35%), and GOOD (18%).

Key Findings from Tulsa County Residents Survey

  • 97% of residents believe the role of THD in training food service workers about safe food preparation and handling is VERY IMPORTANT (85%) or IMPORTANT (12%).
  • 97% of residents believe the role of THD in performing on-site restaurant inspections is VERY IMPORTANT (85%) or IMPORTANT (12%). 
  • 59% of residents rate the performance of THD as VERY GOOD (17%) or GOOD (42%) in the role of inspecting and enforcing food regulations.
