Mission

To improve overall health and academic achievement of Tulsa County school-aged children in collaboration with students, schools, and the community by aligning learning and health through comprehensive nutrition and health education.

 

Why Collaborate with It’s All About Kids

Since its beginning in 2004, It's All About Kids (IAK) has provided an opportunity for thousands of school children to improve their knowledge, attitudes and behaviors toward nutrition and exercise through comprehensive health education. Learning healthy habits early follows them throughout their lifetime.

Each year, the program reaches more than 8,500 students in Tulsa County public school districts, and hosts more than 40 informative and exciting events for parents and families. The program was recognized as a Model Practice in 2008 by the National Association for City and County Health Officials (NACCHO).

It’s All About Kids partners with schools to capture valuable data in the areas of academic improvement, decrease in behavioral referrals, and increase in attendance.  IAK follows the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model placing children in the center as the main focus.  The WSCC merges components from both the Coordinated School Health model and the Whole Child Framework to align learning and health.

 

Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child

The WSCC model was developed by merging the Coordinated School Health model and the Whole Child Framework. The relationship between education and health is evident therefore, the WSCC aligns learning and health rather than focusing on each separately. The child is placed in the center to emphasize the primary focus of the WSCC.  Parents, schools and communities work collaboratively around the child to improve health and academic achievement.  

How to Become an It’s All About Kids School

Step 1

Please contact the IAK program manager Charley Daniel at 918-595-4084 or cdaniel@tulsa-health.org to schedule an introductory meeting. The introductory meeting should include your school’s principal, assistant principal, grade level team leads, P.E. teacher, nurse/health assistant, counselor, and community coordinator/parent liaison. IAK staff involved in the introductory meeting will include the program manager, health educator, dietician, and community resource specialist

Step 2

The introductory meeting is to introduce IAK staff and services to your school’s leadership. Topics to be discussed are:

  • Health Education
  • Nutrition

  • Schedule Meeting with School Staff

Step 3

The school staff introductory meeting is to present IAK staff and services to all school employees. Topics to be discussed are:

  • Health Education
  • Nutrition
  • Community Resource Specialist
  • IAK Webpage and Facebooks
  • IAK School Readiness Assessment

Step 4

The IAK program manager will schedule a meeting with the school leadership to discuss readiness assessment results.

  • Is the school ready to implement IAK services?
  • If the school not ready to implement IAK services, how can IAK and the school leadership work collaboratively to better prepare the school for implementation of IAK services?
  • Based on the results, how can IAK tailor services for your school?

Step 5

IAK staff may begin working with the school based on readiness assessment results.
