Women, Infants and Children (WIC)

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a supplemental nutrition program that serves to safeguard the health of income-eligible women, infants and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk.

This is an application for the Oklahoma Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). Completion of the application does not guarantee you will receive WIC benefits, but it will make it possible for the WIC program to contact you to complete the eligibility process over the phone rather than in person. This application requests that you upload documents such as identification, income information, and address. These can be photos of the documents.

More than 7.5 million people benefit from WIC each month. Services include: Nutrition education for families, referrals to various social service agencies, and issuance of food benefits that can be used at various grocery stores for health foods such as milk, cheese, eggs, fruits, vegetables, beans, peanut butter, infant foods and formula, juice and cereal.

Who is eligible?

  • Pregnant women (and up to six weeks after pregnancy)
  • Breastfeeding women (up to infant’s first birthday)
  • Non-breastfeeding postpartum women (up to six months after pregnancy)
  • Infants (up to first birthday)
  • Children (up to fifth birthday)

How to qualify

  • Live in the state of Oklahoma.
  • Have a family income within program limits.
  • If you receive Medicaid, SNAP or TANF, you are automatically eligible for WIC benefits.

Applicants must live in the state in which they apply and meet income guidelines. WIC is a program of the Food and Nutrition Service, a federal agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is not an entitlement program, but rather a federal grant program for which Congress authorizes a specific amount of funds annually.

Little by Little School Readiness Program

The neighborhood WIC site is one of the few places that young families visit regularly from birth to age 5. Therefore, families can benefit from school readiness interventions that begin long before school-age. All THD WIC clinics feature an early literacy program for clients.

The Little by Little School Readiness program is designed to provide the knowledge and resources to families so they can begin to foster and support early literacy habits within their home on a daily basis. During the course of their visits to WIC, program participants receive:

  • Age-appropriate handouts on reading, development, household safety and family engagement (available in English and Spanish)
  • High-quality children’s books
  • Guidance tied to child development milestones
  • Assistance in connecting to important community services—childcare, preschool and others

Families eligible for WIC who are interested in the program can call 918-582-WELL (9355) to learn how to enroll. Seed funding for the development of the Little by Little School Readiness program was provided by First 5 LA. Funding for the THD’s Little by Little program is provided by the George Kaiser Family Foundation.

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding promotion is an integral part of the WIC program. Its goal is to promote and support breastfeeding statewide.
  • Mothers who breastfeed are eligible to receive WIC benefits longer than non-breastfeeding mothers.
  • Mothers who exclusively breastfeed their infants will receive an enhanced food package.
  • Mothers who breastfeed may be eligible to receive breast pumps to help support their breastfeeding.
  • Mothers who breastfeed may receive follow-up support through Breastfeeding Peer Counselors where available. The Breastfeeding Peer Counselors provide education and support to pregnant and breastfeeding women. The Peer Counselors are available at the following sites: North Regional Health and Wellness Center, Central Regional Health Center, James O. Goodwin Health Center, Mingo WIC Clinic, South Peoria WIC Clinic.
